Producer

Rovellotti

The Rovellotti winery, located in the heart of the Ghemme wine region in Piedmont, stands as one of Upper Piedmont's most respected producers. Founded in 1972, the winery has roots that stretch back over 600 years, deeply connected to the region’s rich history.

The winery is nestled within the ancient Ricetto di Ghemme, a medieval town that once served as an important wine hub for the aristocratic Corte degli Sforza family. Despite the unique challenges of working within the historic town walls, the Rovellotti family expertly adapted, reorganizing their 25-hectare estate and preserving the materials from the original structure.

This commitment to both tradition and innovation is reflected in the wines they produce, which focus on the local Spanna grape (a variety of Nebbiolo), alongside Vespolina and Uva Rara. Their Ghemme DOCG wines are a true expression of the region’s character, captivating wine lovers with their elegance, depth, and distinctive personality.

The Rovellotti family’s dedication to quality winemaking has made them a benchmark in the region, respected by both enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.

Terroir

Alto Piemonte

Alto Piemonte, located at the foothills of the Alps, is known for its unique terroir, shaped by ancient geological activity and a cooler continental climate.

Gattinara DOCG: The soils here are dominated by porphyritic rock of volcanic origin, rich in minerals and iron, which gives the wines structure, elegance, and a distinctive mineral character. The climate, influenced by the Alps, provides a long growing season with warm days and cool nights, allowing Nebbiolo (locally called Spanna) to develop complexity and finesse. Gattinara wines are known for their firm tannins, vibrant acidity, and longevity.

Ghemme DOCG: The soils in Ghemme are more alluvial, with a mix of clay, sand, and moraine deposits from glacial activity. This results in softer tannins and a slightly more approachable style compared to Gattinara. The climate is also moderated by the nearby Monte Rosa, creating wines that balance power and elegance, with floral and red fruit-driven aromas.

Both appellations highlight Nebbiolo’s ability to express terroir, producing wines that are refined, age-worthy, and distinctly different from their counterparts in Langhe.

Region

Piemonte

Piemonte’s terroir is shaped by its diverse landscape, with the Alps to the north and the Apennines to the south, creating a continental climate with cold winters, warm summers, and significant temperature shifts between day and night. These conditions help the grapes develop acidity, structure, and aromatic complexity. The region’s soils vary widely, influencing the character of its wines. In the Langhe, marl and clay with limestone-rich areas give Nebbiolo its power and aging potential, while Monferrato’s mix of sand and calcareous soils results in softer, fruitier expressions, particularly for Barbera and Dolcetto. Further north in Alto Piemonte, ancient volcanic and glacial deposits create mineral-rich soils that enhance Nebbiolo’s freshness and elegance. Rolling hills, foggy mornings, and well-drained soils across the region contribute to Piemonte’s ability to produce refined, long-lived wines that express a strong sense of place.
