Harvested from a vineyard nestled beneath an ancient farmyard, Sottol’Aia embodies the unique exposition of its terroir. This imparts a special character to the wine, resulting in an ample bouquet and a fruity, dry taste that perfectly captures the enchanting essence of Siena.

To elevate the experience further, Sottolaia undergoes a meticulous aging process of three years in small barrels (10 hl.), enhancing its complexity and allowing its flavors to mature gracefully.

Welcome to La Lama Winery, nestled in the scenic hills of Senese Chianti, at an elevation of 350 meters above sea level. Established in 1969 by Giulio Campani, the winery has remained a cherished family estate ever since.

For decades, the Campani family has been dedicated to producing exceptional wines, including the iconic Chianti Classico Sottol’aia and Chianti Classico Riserva Terzo Movimento. These wines are crafted with care, spending at least three years in hand-selected oak barrels. While the vineyards are modest—spanning just three acres—the family pays meticulous attention to every aspect of viticulture, from delicate blooming to manual harvesting and winemaking.

Aging takes place in a natural, ancient cave using large oak barrels and tonneaux, with Tiziana Atzeni, Giulio’s daughter-in-law, overseeing the process.

Visitors are welcome to tour the cave and taste the wines, all with a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. For those seeking a more intimate experience, private lunches, dinners, and events are available. At La Lama Winery, tradition, innovation, and family combine to create wines that truly stand the test of time.

Terroir

Chianti Classico

The terroir of this particular part of Chianti Classico is deeply influenced by its elevation, soil composition, and climate, creating wines with great structure, finesse, and balance. Situated in the hills of central Tuscany, the vineyards benefit from higher altitudes, which provide a cooler growing environment compared to lower-lying areas of the region. This results in longer ripening periods, allowing the grapes—especially Sangiovese—to develop complex aromatics while retaining fresh acidity.

The soils here are predominantly Galestro, a type of friable schistous marl, mixed with limestone and clay, offering excellent drainage and contributing to the minerality and depth of the wines. The Mediterranean climate is moderated by the altitude and surrounding forests, ensuring warm days but cool nights, which enhances the vibrancy and aromatic intensity of the wines. These conditions lead to expressions of Sangiovese that are elegant yet powerful, with fine tannins, bright red fruit, floral notes, and a distinct earthy character.

This terroir embodies the essence of Chianti Classico, producing wines that balance tradition and refinement, with a strong sense of place and aging potential.
