Brecciaro is a red wine based on the Ciliegiolo grape from two different vineyards. The blend of the plots Miriano and Colleozio shows the pure personality of the Ciliegiolo variety. The name Ciliegiolo (Italian for 'small cherry') comes from the cherry aroma of the berries. According to tradition, Ciliegiolo was introduced from Spain around 1870 by pilgrims coming back from Santiago de Compostela, which would justify its synonym Ciliegiolo di Spagna. The wines have an intense red color, aromas of cherries, strawberries, and spices; they may be juicy or fuller in body, occasionally lacking acidity, which is why they complement Sangiovese so well.

Bright ruby, medium concentration. Youthful profile on the nose with fresh dark cherry, raspberry, rose petal, and vanilla. Fresh acidity on the palate, delicate tannin, and a mineral finish. The fermentation, which occurs in stainless steel, follows a period of aging in stainless steel vats and big barrels (9-12 months).

Producer

Bussoletti

In 2009, Leonardo Bussoletti fulfilled his dream by acquiring his family’s vineyards in Narni, Umbria, transitioning from wine merchant to winemaker. His project focuses on traditional Umbrian varieties, particularly Trebbiano Spoletino, Grechetto, and the emblematic Ciliegiolo grape.
Collaborating with the University of Milan, Leonardo has helped identify Ciliegiolo clones, deepening the understanding of this historic variety. First documented around 1870 and linked to Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo was traditionally blended into Chianti and is believed to have arrived in Italy via pilgrims from Santiago de Compostela.
Leonardo’s dedication has earned global recognition, especially for his work with Ciliegiolo di Narni. As the founder of its consortium, he has united producers to revive and celebrate this distinctive grape.
At Bussoletti Winery, both white and red wines undergo spontaneous fermentation and remain unfiltered, showcasing precision, authenticity, and a unique personality that resonates on the international stage.

Terroir

Narni - Umbria

The terroir of Narni, in southern Umbria, is defined by its rolling hills, limestone-rich soils, and a climate that balances Mediterranean warmth with cooling influences from the Apennine foothills. Leonardo Bussoletti focuses on reviving and refining the local Ciliegiolo grape, which thrives in these well-drained, mineral-laden soils. The region’s warm days and cool nights allow for slow, even ripening, preserving the grape’s vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity. The combination of calcareous clay and sandy deposits enhances both structure and elegance in the wines, resulting in expressions that are fresh, floral, and deeply connected to their terroir. Bussoletti’s approach highlights the finesse and versatility of Ciliegiolo, showcasing the full potential of Narni’s unique microclimate and soil composition.

Region

Umbria

Umbria’s terroir is defined by its rolling hills, mountainous regions, and river valleys, giving the region a variety of microclimates that are ideal for viticulture. The climate is predominantly continental, with hot, dry summers and cold winters, but the cool air from the Apennines moderates the temperatures, helping to preserve the freshness and acidity in the grapes. The soils in Umbria are largely clay, limestone, and volcanic, contributing to the structure and complexity of the wines. The region benefits from significant diurnal temperature variation, with warm days and cooler nights, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while maintaining balance and aromatic intensity.

Umbria is known for its Sagrantino, which thrives in the region’s unique terroir and produces bold, tannic reds with intense dark fruit flavors and a distinctive earthy quality. The region also produces crisp whites like Trebbiano Spoletino and Grechetto, which express the freshness and minerality of the local soils. The combination of Umbria’s varied landscape and its diverse terroir results in wines that are elegant, structured, and full of character, with a clear expression of the land’s natural beauty and traditional winemaking techniques.
